  2. Try tightening the filter handle a little more.
  3. Make sure that the edge of the filter cup is clean from the espresso grounds before you insert it into the brew head. Also ensure that brew head is clean.
What can cause espresso to flow through too slowly?
You may have tamped coffee grounds too firmly. If problem persists, try cleaning the appliance.
Why does the unit leak from the bottom?
Check if the drip tray is full. The tray collects water that should be discarded after each use.
Why does the espresso come out cold?
  1. Try tamping the espresso grounds more firmly.
  2. Pre-warm the cup by rinsing it with hot water.
  3. You may need to clean your Espresso Maker.
What causes water to shoot from the brew basket upon removal?
When you make several servings of espresso consecutively, the pressure develops inside the brew basket. To avoid accidents, be sure to relieve the build-up pressure before you remove the brew basket by turning the unit to "Froth" mode and allowing the steam to exit.
Why doesn't the milk froth properly?
  1. Make sure you use fresh, cold milk. Skim milk works best for frothing.
  2. Use a stainless steel frothing pitcher, and ensure that it is cool before using.
  3. Make sure the water reservoir is full.
  4. Try moving the frothing pitcher slightly up and down while frothing.
  5. The frothing tube needs to be cleaned after every use. First, fill the frothing pitcher with water, and run the steaming feature for twenty seconds. If steaming tube is blocked, use a toothpick to unblock it. Then, steam the water for another 30 seconds.
Where can I purchase replacement parts for Mr. Coffee® Espresso/Cappuccino makers?

Why is my espresso maker not making espresso?
If your espresso maker is not making espresso, below are some causes:
  1. No water in reservoir
  2. Coffee grinds too fine
  3. Too much coffee in the filter
  4. Cap is not secure, causing steam to escape
  5. Appliance not plugged in
  6. Coffee grinds have been tamped/compressed too much
  7. Unit may need to be cleaned
If the above troubleshooting does not work, your product needs to be repaired or replaced.
How do you clean a steam espresso maker?
To clean your steam espresso maker, please see the below instructions:
  1. Turn the unit to "OFF" and unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  2. The frothing tube may still be hot, do not touch it with your hands until it has cooled. Remove frothing aid and wipe frothing tube with a damp cloth. Using the wrench built into the measuring spoon, unscrew the frothing aid and clean valve with a needle or toothpick.
  3. The carafe, carafe lid, filter, brew basket and drip tray can be washed with soapy water or placed on the top rack of your dishwasher. CAUTION: Do not immerse appliance in water. Do not remove reservoir cap or brew basket will appliance is under pressure.
  4. After the pressure has been released, remove reservoir cap. Discard the remaining water through the top opening of the water reservoir by turning the appliance upside down over the sink. Always empty the water reservoir between uses. Do not immerse appliance in water. Screw the reservoir cap back in place.
  5. Wipe housing with a soft wet cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads as they will scratch the finish.
  6. Do not store the filter holder in the brew head. This can adversely affect the seal between the brew head and the filter holder while brewing espresso.

    DELIMING

Mineral deposits built-up in the Espresso Maker will affect the operation of the appliance. Your Espresso Maker must be delimed when you begin to notice an increase in the time to brew espresso, or when there is excessive steaming. Also, you may notice a build up of white deposits on the surface of the brew head.

The frequency of cleaning depends upon the harness of the water used. The following table gives the suggested cleaning intervals.

    TO DELIME WATER RESERVOIR:
    1. Make sure the control knob is in the "OFF" position and that the power cord is disconnected from the electrical outlet.
    2. If the appliance is cool and the pressure has been released, remove the reservoir cap and fill reservoir with fresh, undiluted white household vinegar.
    3. Make sure the control know is in the "OFF" position and that the power cord is disconnected from the electrical outlet.
    4. If the appliance is cool and the pressure has been released, remove the reservoir cap and fill reservoir with fresh, undiluted white household vinegar.
    TO DELIME INTERNAL PARTS:
    1. Make sure you delime the inside of the water reservoir first by following the "Deliming" steps above.
    2. Make sure all controls are "OFF," the power cord is disconnected from the electrical outlet, the appliance is cool and all pressure in the appliance has been released. Fill carafe to the top of the metal band with vinegar and pour into reservoir.
    3. Screw the cap back on top of the water reservoir. Make sure the cap is tight.
    4. Insert the brew basket (with filter) and place the glass carafe with lid on the drip tray.
    5. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
    6. Turn the control knob to the position. When vinegar begins to flow into the carafe, place a cup with cold water under the frothing aid. Insert the frothing tube into the water and slowly turn the control knob to the position. After ten seconds turn the control knob to the "OFF" position. This will clean any residue left in the frothing tube from frothing milk.
    7. Turn the control knob to the position. When all the vinegar has been pumped into the carafe and the flow has stopped, turn the control knob to "OFF" and allow the appliance to cool.
    8. Repeat Steps 1-7 using only tap water to rinse any remaining traces of vinegar out of the machine. Repeat this rinsing process, allowing the machine to cool and pressure to be released before each rinsing.

      Suggested cleaning intervals:

Soft Water - Every 80 brew cycles
Hard Water - Every 40 brew cycles

Iced Tea Makers

Why is my tea cloudy?
The scientific reason for the cloudiness of tea is the precipitation of the tannins in the tea that occurs when the tea is cooled. Cloudiness does not affect the flavor of the tea.
  1. Stronger brews tend to cloud more readily than weaker ones.
  2. High quality teas cloud faster than others.
  3. Hard water also has a clouding affect on tea

Add a small amount (1/4 cup) of boiling water into the brewed tea to help reduce the amount of cloudiness.
My Iced Tea Maker will not turn on or brew.
With some iced tea makers, you may experience difficulties with starting a brewing cycle when you first begin using your Iced Tea Maker because the start button may be tight.

To correct this, do the following:
  1. Press the button and hold down while bracing the unit from the back.
  2. Hold the button for 5 seconds.
  3. After you use your iced tea maker a few times, the button will become less tight.
How do I clean my Iced Tea Maker?
  1. To maintain the quality of all the parts and minimize tea and coffee stains, we recommend washing the pitcher/lid, baskets/lid, with warm water and mild detergent after each use.
  2. Hard water can leave mineral deposits inside the pitcher and brew basket. To remove, fill the brew basket and pitcher with warm white vinegar. Let soak for 20 minutes. Rinse.
  3. Do not use harsh, abrasive cleaners. They will cause scratches which can lead to breakage.

Your machine must be delimed when you begin to notice an increase in steaming or if the pumping action stops before all the water has been pumped out of the machine. The frequency of cleaning depends on the hardness of your water.

To delime, follow these easy instructions.
    1. Pour 1 quart (32 oz.) of undiluted white household vinegar into the water reservoir.
    2. Place the pitcher lid on the pitcher. Slide the pitcher under the machine.
    3. Push the "on" button to begin brewing cycle. After 1 cup of vinegar has pumped into the pitcher, unplug appliance. Let stand 30 minutes.
    4. Re-plug the cord. Your machine will automatically continue to pump out the remaining vinegar.
    5. When your machine shuts off, unplug the cord, remove the pitcher. Discard the vinegar.
    6. Fill the pitcher with clear tap water to the water level marked on the pitcher. Repeat Steps 1-5 again using water until all traces of vinegar are gone.

      Suggested cleaning intervals:

Soft Water - Every 80 brew cycles
Hard Water - Every 40 brew cycles

SPEEDBREW®

How do I set up my SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker for first time use?
This procedure is only necessary the first time the SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker is used or after the internal tank has been drained for moving or long-term storage.

Prior to first use the internal hot water tank must be filled with water and the water given time to heat to proper brewing temperature.

STEP 1
  • Make sure the coffeemaker is unplugged.
  • Wash the glass decanter (Model SB11) or the thermal carafe (Model SBT85) and the filter basket in warm water and mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly then dry with a clean cloth. Replace filter basket onto rails and decanter on the coffeemaker.
STEP 2
  • Set the Brew Control Dial to "Brew Regular"
STEP 3
  • Fill the glass decanter with fresh, cold water to the "10 cup" line.
STEP 4
  • Slowly empty the water from the glass decanter into the water fill area on top of the coffeemaker.
  • Allow a few minutes for the water to drain into the internal hot water reservoir.
STEP 5
  • Fill a second glass decanter with fresh, cold water to the "10 cup" line.
  • Slowly empty the water from the glass decanter into the water fill area on top of the coffeemaker.
  • Allow a few minutes for the water to drain into the internal hot water reservoir.
STEP 6
  • Fill a third glass decanter with fresh, cold water to the "2 cup" line corresponding to the top of the metal band.
  • Slowly empty the water from the glass decanter into the water fill area on the coffeemaker. Place the decanter on the Warming Plate.

NOTE: Adding more water than the specified amount will cause water to flow from the brew basket. If water comes out of the brew basket, replace carafe under coffeemaker.
STEP 7
  • Plug the power cord into a working 120 Volt AC power outlet.
  • Set the Power Switch (located on the lower left side of the coffeemaker) to ON. The Power Switch will illuminate while in the ON position.
STEP 8
  • Wait 20 minutes to allow the water in the internal hot water reservoir to reach the proper brewing temperature.
Your SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker is now ready for you to start brewing your first pot of coffee. To brew coffee, follow the "Brewing Coffee" instructions in the Instruction Manual.
How do I brew coffee with my SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker?
Make sure that you have completed the initial set up before brewing
  1. Set the control dial to "Fill Reservoir." This setting prevents the water from entering the internal hot water reservoir and allows time for the carafe to be placed in position before starting the brew cycle.
  2. Place an 8-12 cup basket style paper filter into the Removable Filter Basket.
NOTE: To avoid overflow, do not use a permanent filter.
  3. Add the appropriate amount of ground coffee to the filter - refer to the "Suggested Coffee Measurement Chart" below.

    Selecting and measuring ground coffee
For best results, use coffee ground for use with automatic drip coffee makers. The amounts shown below are suggested amounts – use more or less to suit your tastes.

To brew (5 oz. Cups): Use this amount of ground coffee
    12 Cups: 11 Tablespoons
    10 Cups: 9 Tablespoons
    8 Cups: 7 Tablespoons
    6 Cups: 6 Tablespoons
    4 Cups: 5 Tablespoons
    2 Cups: 3 Tablespoons

Replace the Filter Basket in position on the coffeemaker.

WARNING: To avoid risk of personal injury or damage to property, be sure that the filter basket is securely in place and that the carafe is centered under the filter basket before brewing begins.
  4. Fill the glass decanter (Model SB11) or stainless steel thermal carafe (Model SBT85) with 6 to 10 cups of fresh, cold water.
NOTE: The SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker is designed to brew 6 to 10 cups of coffee at a time.
  5. Carefully pour the water into the water fill area on top of the coffeemaker.
  6. Place the glass decanter (Model SB11) or stainless steel thermal carafe (Model SBT85) in place on the coffeemaker.
  7. To start the brew cycle, set the Control Dial to "Brew Decaf" when using decaffeinated coffee grounds or to "Brew Regular" when brewing regular coffee grounds.
NOTE: When brewing decaffeinated coffee, the "Brew Decaf" setting increases the brew cycle time to allow the full flavor of the coffee to be extracted. Therefore, to avoid overflowing the filter basket make sure the control dial in set to "Brew Decaf" when using decaffeinated coffee.
  8. Press the Warming Plate Switch (Model SB11 only) to ON. The red Warming Plate Indicator light above the Warming Plate Switch will illuminate to indicate that the Warming Plate is on.
For SBT85 only: For best results and heat retention, brew into thermal carafe while it is in the "closed" position. When pouring coffee, rotate the lid counter-clockwise until the "Pour" arrow on the lid points to the arrow in the carafe handle. To reduce heat loss, retighten the lid to the closed position after pouring.
NOTE: To avoid damaging the glass decanter, the Warming Plate Switch must be turned OFF when the decanter is empty or when the coffeemaker is not in use.

The SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker is designed to remain plugged in with the Power Switch (located on the lower left side of the coffeemaker) turned ON except during those times when your coffeemaker is emptied for transport or storage or during times when it will not be used for several days.

During regular operation, you might hear a rumbling/boiling noise. This sound, typical of coffeemakers that rely on displacement technology, occurs when the heater turns on and off to keep water at brewing temperature.

  9. When the brew cycle is complete and the used coffee grounds have cooled, carefully remove and discharge the used coffee grounds and filter.
  10. Make sure you turn the Control Dial back to "Fill Reservoir" before following the above "Brewing Coffee" instructions and enjoying another pot of coffee.
WARNING: Brewed coffee and grounds, both in the filter basket and carafe are very hot! Handle with care to avoid scalding. If filter basket overflows, or if the filter basket fails to drain into the carafe during the brew cycle, do not open or handle the basket. Turn the Control Dial to "Fill Reservoir", unplug the coffeemaker and wait for the contents to cool before handling.
How do I clean my SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker?
To Clean Mineral Deposits from your SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker

To keep your coffeemaker free of mineral buildup, it is recommended that you follow the steps listed below every 40 brew cycles for hard water or 80 brew cycles for soft water.

  1. Turn the brew control dial to "Fill."
  2. Raise the water reservoir lid on top of the coffeemaker.
  3. Pour one decanter (10 cups or 50 fluid ounces) of undiluted white household vinegar into the water reservoir.
NOTE: Do not fill the water reservoir with any liquid other than cold water or white household vinegar for cleaning.
  4. Slide the brew basket into position and return the empty decanter to its place directly under the brew basket.
  5. Turn the brew control dial to "Brew Regular."
  6. Let the unit and full decanter sit for 2 hours. This will allow time for the vinegar to break down the lime and mineral deposits.
  7. After 2 hours, empty the decanter and rinse with clean water.
  8. To rinse the vinegar out of the internal tank, turn the brew control dial to "Fill".
  9. Pour one decanter (10 cups or 50 fluid ounces) of clean, cold water into the water reservoir.
  10. Return the decanter to its place directly under the brew basket.
  11. Turn the brew control dial to "Brew Regular." Empty decanter when the brew cycle is complete (approximately three minutes).
  12. Repeat Steps 8 – 11 an additional six (6) times. This will ensure that all the vinegar is rinsed out of the internal tank.
  13. After cleaning, wait at least 20 minutes before brewing your next pot of coffee. This will allow the water in the internal tank to heat to the proper brewing temperature.

Cleaning the Decanter
Hard water can leave a whitish mineral deposit inside the decanter. Coffee can discolor these deposits, sometimes leaving a brownish stain . To remove these stains, follow these simple steps:
  1. Use a solution of equal parts: white vinegar and hot water.
  2. Let solution stand in decanter for about 20 minutes and then discard.
  3. Wash and rinse the decanter thoroughly using a soft cloth. Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners. These may cause scratches which can lead to breakage.
NOTE: Do not place thermal carafe in dishwasher (Model SBT85).

Draining the Water Reservoir
The water reservoir in your Mr. Coffee® SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker should be emptied whenever the coffeemaker will be moved, shipped or stored. Please follow these steps:
  1. Turn the Reservoir Power Switch to "Off". Unplug the SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker power cord and allow the hot water to cool in the tank. Pour a full decanter of COLD water into the water reservoir. Close the lid and place the decanter back under the brew basket.
  2. Turn the brew control dial to "Brew Regular." When the decanter is full, empty it and repeat this process. This will cool the water in the water reservoir.
  3. Turn the Brew Control Dial to "Fill" and remove the brew basket.
  4. Grasp the back of the SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker and tip the unit forward over a sink at a 45 degree angle. Most of the water in the water reservoir will flow from the shower head. Continue tipping the coffeemaker until the flow of water stops. Please note that some water may remain in the internal tank.

Routine Cleaning
The decanter and brew basket should be rinsed after each use. The glass decanter and lid (Model SB11), and the brew basket are top-rack dishwasher safe. NOTE: Do not place thermal carafe in dishwasher (Model SBT85). To clean your stainless steel Mr. Coffee® SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker, ALWAYS use a soft cloth. NEVER use any kind of abrasive cleanser or pad that could scratch the metal. Simple dishwashing liquid and water will remove most fingerprints, grease, dirt and grime. Occasionally, window cleaners, vinegar and water solutions, standard non-abrasive kitchen cleaning fluids, or commercially available cleaning products for stainless steel surfaces can be used. After cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth to dry and buff the surface to a brilliant shine.

What kind of filters can I use in my Mr. Coffee® SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker?
For best results, please use a Mr. Coffee® 8-12 cup paper basket filter or another brand's 8-12 cup SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker paper filter. It is not recommended that you use a permanent filter or commercial filters.
I put 10 cups of water into my reservoir but my Mr. Coffee® SPEEDBREW® coffeemaker did not brew 10 cups of coffee.
  1. The internal tank may not be full. If more than 3 to 5 days passes in between uses, some of the water may have evaporated. To ensure that your internal tank is full, place the decanter onto the warming plate and using a different pitcher, pour water into the reservoir. Stop pouring when water begins to drain into the decanter.
  2. Please note that when brewing coffee, as much as one cup of water may be retained in the coffee grounds.
  3. The SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker is not recommended for use in elevations more than 5000 feet.
Why is my coffeemaker taking more than 4 minutes to brew a pot of coffee?
  1. Be sure that your SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker brew control dial is set to 'Brew Regular' when brewing regular coffee. Please note that using the 'Brew Decaf' setting will slow the brewing process. It is recommended that the 'Brew Decaf' setting be used when brewing decaffeinated coffee.
  2. Your SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker may need to be cleaned.
Why does my SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker appear to be leaking water?
You may have overfilled the upper reservoir. Immediately place the decanter under the brew basket and move the brew control dial to 'Brew Regular' to allow the water to drain. Turn the unit off and allow it to cool down before moving it to wipe any residual water off of the counter.
What is the red plastic piece inside of the debris screen of my SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker water reservoir?
It is the Overfill Indicator. If the Overfill Indicator begins to rise, your upper reservoir is too full. Stop filling immediately.
Why does the outside of my SPEEDBREW® Coffeemaker get hot?
The internal tank remains hot to keep the water at optimal brewing temperature and may be felt on the stainless steel exterior.
