How to Create a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home

Fall has arrived and do you know what that means for latte lovers? It's finally pumpkin spice latte time. But this year, there's no need to make the trip to a coffee shop to enjoy that aromatic, rich brew you've been waiting all summer for. Instead, follow these tips to make a pumpkin spice latte at home:

Prep the Cup
Have you ever noticed how many cafes store mugs on top of their espresso machines? This isn't just convenient - it keeps the mugs warm so the temperature of your latte doesn't drop the moment it begins to pour. To emulate this awesome idea, warm your pumpkin spice latte cup in the microwave for 30 or so seconds before you make a shot of espresso. Once it's toasty, sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg into the cup to get the flavor going right away.

Start with Great Espresso
While this specially flavored latte is all about the extras, you have to have a great shot of espresso to start with. Use your Mr. Coffee® Cafe Barista to pull a shot of your favorite espresso. For a more milky flavor, opt for a blonder brew. If you like a darker taste, opt for a darker espresso bean. Always make sure your filter is clean and your grounds are to the size recommended for your machine. These are crucial factors in ensuring your espresso is tasty and consistent.

Move on to Milk
The largest part of a latte is the milk. Here you have many choices, from whole to 2 percent, vanilla-flavored soy and even goats milk. The fattier the milk the better the froth, so keep that in mind while perusing the grocery store shelves before making your pumpkin spice latte. You can choose a sweeter milk like vanilla soy to reduce the amount of sugar you will add while pulling an espresso shot. The Mr. Coffee® Cafe Barista makes it a breeze to steam and froth milk to the perfect temperature and consistency. Simply push the latte button and you'll soon be enjoying your pumpkin spice treat.

Don't Forget the Extras
You can buy pumpkin pie spice at any grocer or supermarket. It typically contains cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and a few other tasty flavors. Add a drop of vanilla extract to your latte along with a dash of ground black pepper and a healthy drizzle of pumpkin spice syrup.

Take this delicious drink a step further by making your own pumpkin flavoring. Simply remove the rind from a pumpkin and cook the meat of the veggie in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add sugar to taste and let the mixture become a bubbling syrup. Next, blend the pumpkin with your milk and use the Mr. Coffee® Cafe Barista steam wand to froth until desired drinkable temperature and foam. Pour it into a warm mug, add espresso and top with whipped cream and pumpkin spice. Yum!
