Infusing Coffee Into Meditation

Drinking a flavorful, bold and aromatic cup of coffee is how many of us choose to greet a new day. More often than not, however, life gets in the way. Whether it's making the kids school lunches, finishing up the last of the laundry or simply choosing the right outfit for work, the first coffee of the morning tends to be a rushed experience, poured into a to-go cup on the way out of the front door.

Allowing a little extra time in the morning can permit you to savor and sip on your cup of caffeinated gold, which in turn can help promote relaxation and mindfulness. Indeed, while coffee is typically associated with energy boosts and hectic schedules, many people now agree that coffee can actually be used to facilitate relaxation, particularly if it is infused into meditation.

What is Meditation?
Meditation, in its basic sense, is understood as a process whereby an individual takes the time to clear his or her head and focus on one thing only - whether that's on a particular thought, sight, sound, the weather, a piece of food or a drink, the list is endless. This process is believed to engender a sense of true awareness and relaxation, as the typical medley of thoughts and feelings that plague our minds in any one moment are pushed aside, allowing for clear and peaceful focus. Meditation can take many forms and can mean any number of things to different people. For some, meditation carries a spiritual or religious significance, while for others meditation is used simply as a tool for stress-relief and relaxation.

How to Meditate With a Cup of Coffee
As described, focusing on pretty much anything can be understood as meditation, so why not let that thing be your morning cup of coffee?

Meditation can actually begin as you prepare your morning drink. As you gather the ground beans, be sure to stand still and appreciate the smells - focus on the coffee grounds, as well as any natural sounds that you may hear around you. Perhaps your windows are open and you can hear the birds gently chirping outside or the sound of the wind gracefully blowing against the leaves. After taking a moment, fire up your Mr. Coffee® Advanced Brew 8-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker and wait in silence for your intensely flavorful beverage.

Once your cup of coffee has arrived, take it in your hands and ponder the sensations - the warmth from the mug and the enticing scents emanating from the richly brewed java. When you take your first sip, let the coffee sit on your tongue momentarily and swirl it around your palate. Concentrate on the flavorful notes and the heat of the liquid before swallowing.

It is also helpful to focus on any other physical sensations you may be experiencing while drinking your coffee, whether that's the perception of your feet on the ground, the feel of your clothes against your skin, the impression of saliva collecting in your mouth and the heat of the beverage in your stomach after your first delectable sip.

The Benefits of Coffee Meditation
Meditating with coffee each morning needn't be time-consuming. All you need is five minutes or so to begin reaping the benefits. The caffeine from the coffee can boost your concentration and the meditation itself carries the health benefits outlined above - improved mood, lowered blood pressure and a boost to the immune system.

Coffee meditation expert and author of the popular text "Zen Coffee: A Guide to Mindful Meditation," Gloria Chadwick, elaborated on the unique benefits of coffee meditation in a quote to The New York Times.

"It would seem that meditating by coffee is an oxymoron. Coffee jazzes you up and meditation calms you down." she said. "By focusing on your coffee - making it a special time to meditate - it can actually make you calm and relaxed."
